MAS 7803 Secondary Curriculum and Instruction

MAS 7803 focuses on the design, evaluation, and enactment of curriculum and pedagogical approaches for middle and high school classrooms. Candidates examine how learning theory, adolescent development, content standards, and contextual factors inform curriculum scope and sequence, unit design, and daily instructional decision-making. Emphasis is placed on creating coherent, standards-aligned curricula that integrate research-based instructional strategies, inclusive practices, and purposeful use of technology to support diverse learners.
Throughout the course, candidates engage in curriculum design to develop curriculum maps, units, and lessons that align learning objectives, instructional methods, and assessments. Candidates analyze and apply pedagogical approaches that promote engagement, differentiation, culturally responsive teaching, and meaningful assessment. Using student data, case studies, and instructional scenarios, candidates reflect on how curriculum and pedagogy interact to influence student learning and instructional effectiveness in middle and secondary settings.
