MED 7820 Beyond the Screen: Engagement
This course examines the opportunities and limitations of technology-rich learning environments and prepares educators to make intentional, evidence-based decisions regarding technology integration. Drawing upon research in the learning sciences, cognitive psychology, student engagement, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), culturally responsive teaching, accessibility and inclusive design, and educational technology, candidates critically evaluate the impact of technology on student engagement, accessibility, equity, and achievement. Through a critical examination of current research, including The Digital Delusion by Jared Cooney Horvath, candidates analyze, redesign, and implement authentic instructional experiences to explore how technology can both enhance and hinder learning for diverse populations. Emphasis is placed on evaluating instructional practices, selecting technologies with purpose, and designing engaging learning experiences that promote meaningful participation, remove barriers to learning, and support success for all students, particularly those with exceptionalities.
