VFP 202 Sound Editing and Design
This course focuses on the practical skills of sound editing and design, with special attention to music and ambience for visual media. Students learn to use industry-standard audio software, mainly Pro Tools, while developing creative choices that support storytelling. Students begin by learning professional audio editing workflows. Through hands-on projects, they practice navigating Pro Tools, importing and editing audio, managing multi-track sessions, and exporting files for different media formats. They also learn how to use editing tools, transitions, and plug-ins to keep sound clear, balanced, and synchronized with visuals. The course then explores how music and ambience contribute to storytelling in film, television, games, and podcasts. Students edit music to create smooth transitions, design ambient soundscapes that establish mood and setting, and use MIDI and layering techniques to support emotional moments. Through listening and creative exercises, they analyze how music and environmental sound influence audience experience. In the final part of the course, students develop mixing and finishing skills. They practice EQ, compression, gain staging, and other processing techniques, learn to use effects creatively, and follow professional standards for audio levels and delivery. The course concludes with a final project in which students produce a polished mix that combines music and ambience with visual media. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with both the technical mastery and creative insight needed to edit, design, and mix music and ambience for compelling, professional-quality media productions.
