Chemistry, Associate of Science

Program Purpose

The proposed Associate of Science (A.S.) in Chemistry is a 62-credit, STEM-designated program designed to prepare students for entry-level positions or seamless transfer to a four-year institution, including remaining at Wilmington University to complete the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry program. This program will be offered through flexible online, face-to-face, and hybrid modalities. The curriculum is meticulously aligned with in-demand skills, providing students with the foundational theoretical knowledge and practical experience necessary for success. Core coursework includes an emphasis on General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry, supplemented by essential supporting studies in biological science, data science, and mathematics. Graduates will possess the fundamental competencies required to immediately contribute to the scientific workforce.

Program Competencies

Students who successfully complete the A.S. in Chemistry program will have a level of applicable knowledge in the following areas as appropriate to one’s field of study:

  1. Foundational Chemical Knowledge and Quantitative Reasoning: Apply foundational chemical principles and quantitative methods from general and introductory organic chemistry to analyze matter and solve structured chemical problems.
  2. Laboratory Skills and Data Interpretation: Demonstrate safe laboratory practices, perform standard experimental protocols, utilize basic chemical instrumentation and analyze experimental data to support theoretical concepts.
  3. Scientific Communication and Information Literacy: Locate and evaluate scientific sources and communicate chemical procedures, data and results clearly in written and oral formats for academic audiences.
  4. Professionalism Practice and Scientific Awareness: Demonstrate ethical, collaborative and professional behavior in laboratory and classroom settings, recognizing the societal and environmental context of chemical science.
